Itturalde v Hilo Medical Center
Hawaii’s latest malpractice case featuring the unorthodox use of a screwdriver shaft as a substitute for an orthopedic titanium rod. The case raises legal issues of respondeat superior, negligent credentialling, joint and several liability, products liability, professional misconduct and punitive damages. These issues will be discussed with reference to Singapore law.

Prof Tan Siang Yong MD, JD, is Emeritus Professor of Medicine at the University of Hawaii, and Director of The St. Francis International Centre for Healthcare Ethics in Honolulu. He is a distinguished scholar with over 100 published articles in endocrinology, law, ethics and medical history. Author of the 2006 book “Medical Malpractice: Understanding the Law, Managing the Risk,” he recently completed “Medical Negligence and Professional Misconduct”, a Singapore Halsbury treatise which is scheduled for release in mid 2012.
